We are thrilled to announce that the Potomac Odyssey Relay will be held again in 2017!
If you don’t have the time (or energy!) to do an overnight relay, or if you just can’t stand the thought of spending that much time in a van with your sweaty friends, we have a great option for you! The Potomac Odyssey is a nine-leg, 57-mile relay beginning in Brunswick, MD on Saturday, April 29th. Teams will start at roughly 7:00 am depending upon their predicted pace. They will finish at the SW Waterfront and be a part of the overall relay celebration party! Participants in the Potomac Odyssey receive separate t-shirts and compete for their own awards.
It’s easy! You can have a team of 3, in which each member will run 3 legs for a total of about 19 miles each. OR you can have a team of 6, in which 3 members run 1 leg and the other 3 run 2 legs each. If you decide on a 3-member team, check out the individual leg maps further down on this page, because if you decide to alternate runners as teams normally would in a relay, one team member (the one who runs legs 3, 6 and 9) will end up running 23.6 miles! So make sure that person is a beast! If you don’t happen to have a beast, no worries. We have relaxed the typical relay rules for the Potomac Odyssey Relay – your team members can run the legs in any order that you choose and we don’t care!
Yes, but you will need to pay the fee for a 6-member team.
Check-in will be at the American Odyssey Relay transition in Brunswick, MD. See the interactive Leg 1 map below under Individual Leg Downloads for more information. All teams will start around 7:00 AM, so plan on being at the Brunswick transition by at least 6:30 AM to check in and get yourselves ready!
For the Potomac Odyssey relay, teams are only permitted one vehicle for safety reasons. Some of the transitions have very small parking areas and we want to ensure the safety of all participants.
YES! You will need to provide 1 volunteer for every team that has at least 3 members who live within 50 miles of any point of the Potomac Odyssey Relay course. If all of your friends are running with you or refuse to get off the couch to help out, never fear! You can pay a fee to cover your volunteer requirement – just click here.
Brunswick itself does not have much in the way of lodging, but there are several hotels a few miles up the road in Harpers Ferry. Econo Lodge in Harper’s Ferry is offering a 10% discount if you mention that you are running the Potomac Odyssey Relay on the C&O Canal.
We are working on obtaining a group rate at The Bavarian Inn, so check back soon for more info!

Please Note: Distances on the PDFs are per segment, whereas distances on the interactive maps are cumulative. That’s why they don’t match exactly. These maps are pretty close to exact, but they aren’t perfect. Neither are GPS devices. If you find that your GPS device measures the leg differently by .1 or even .2 on a long leg, please don’t get cranky on us! Feel free to email us about larger discrepancies a few days after the event if you are concerned.
