Each local team (i.e. a team that has at least 3 runners who live within 50 miles of any point of the Odyssey course), must supply three volunteers or pay a per-volunteer waiver fee. For the Potomac Odyssey the requirement is one volunteer. The last day to register volunteers is Friday, April 22. The fee is $75 per volunteer until March 31st, $100 from April 1-15th and $125 thereafter until race day. Click HERE to pay for your volunteers. All of these fees are paid directly to our charities who, in turn, supply us with the volunteers that teams don’t supply.
What it takes to be an American/Potomac Odyssey Relay volunteer…
How to become an Odyssey Relay volunteer
Each team within 50 miles of the relay is required to supply AT LEAST 3 volunteers for the relay. Many other teams supply volunteers as they have really nice family members and friends. We also have special charity volunteers. Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of American Odyssey Relay volunteering!
Volunteering is easy. An average shift is about 4-5 hours long and yes, you can request a location if it’s not already taken. Volunteers who sign up at “difficult-to-fill” transitions, meaning that they generally have crazy hours, will count as TWO volunteers for their team! These difficult-to-fill transitions include 19, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 27. Volunteering requires that you either direct traffic (telling runners and/or vans where to go) AND/OR keep track of when a relay runner passes though your area by noting the time on a master list and/or cheering runners on (maybe even dressing up for a costume award – see website photos and awards) and/or picking up trash and removing signage after the last team passes through. Easy! You will always have others around you, especially for those late night times.
About that…this is a race that runs around the clock. Therefore, we need volunteers around the clock. Yep, that means we need volunteers at midnight, 2 am, 4 am, 6 am…you get the picture. Some people prefer to work those time slots as it’s the most concentrated time of the race, when the most runners and teams pass through a transition area, making it even more exciting. Or maybe it’s that those volunteers are younger and can stay up longer. Or those volunteers just wanna do something wild and crazy and fun. Yes, you can be one of those!
You will receive a confirmation once you sign up and if you need to make any changes later on, send us an email. You will also receive informational emails between now and the race. Make sure to come back to the American Odyssey Relay website and this page as we will list all volunteer updates here. Thanks again and see you soon!
Go Odyssey! Go volunteers! Go perfect weather!
Our volunteers have an absolute blast, so join them for our next relay!
